Beloved

My first poem from NaPoWriMo 23. The prompt was to write something based on a book cover. I chose Beloved as it’s a favourite of mine.

The branch of a cherry tree
splits the page in two
promising growth and life
and vivid femininity.
A single word, tombstone black:
Beloved.
The stems curls around
defiant letters, willing
them to life, shaking
them from stillness.
Beloved.
Carved out in an agony
of love, black against
pink. Life clawing back.
Returning.
Beloved.
The word strung out
across ribboning branches.
Flutters in the wind,
grows with the tree.
